Fashion mavens Lara Bingle, Jodie Gordon, Camilla Freeman-Tooper and Sophie Lowe gathered in a buzzing industrial space for the Ellery spring/summer 2012/13 show, which had an unlikely muse: designer Kym Ellery's childhood teddy bear! "Driven by the guilt of discarding her beloved bear at the age of eighteen, Ellery has created this collection as an homage," read the program for the show, but the designer's new range was anything but childish.
The first look on the runway was a burgundy shift dress with oversized sleeves – shaped, we suspect, like the ears of her beloved bear. The distinctive silhouette permeated the collection, including a selection of bright white tops and a red organza gown. Unique shapes reigned supreme – also seen in the form of an intricately draped metallic gown, olive-green peplum shorts, and a billowing A-line dress.
Prior to the show Clive Allwright, KMS California Hair Director, told InStyle the models' hair was pared back at the eleventh hour: "Originally, we decided on an elegant, romantic look but we made a last-minute decision to ditch that in favour of a low, ballerina-style bun that wouldn't overpower the clothes," says Allwright. "The texture was dry but sealed with a glassy finish."
"[Ellery's] collection is inspired by treasured childhood memories, with luxe colours and exquisite textures," said Make-up Director, Napoleon Perdis, who sent the models out with a sheer base and metallic eyes. "To create the flawless base we used Napoleon Perdis Auto Pilot Complex Skin Renewal Serum with Napoleon Perdis Sheer Genius Foundation. We created a dewy touch on the upper cheekbones using lip-gloss. It's the perfect makeup for the Ellery girl – cool."
