|
On her debut album, British singer Anna Calvi is consumed by passion and drama. Here, she conveys the same message with bold tailoring and textural accents.
Anna Calvi is perched in a cane swing chair, next to a sweeping floor-to-ceiling window. Dressed in three-quarter-length, black Gucci pants and a flame-red silk shirt, with lips to match, her hair is slicked over into its signature side-part. On stage, the diminutive singer-songwriter is larger than life, a fierce and passionate performer.
But in person, the 29-year-old, who grew up in London, is barely audible. While she confesses she can be shy, more often she's just softly spoken. "I don't have any problem expressing myself. My parents are therapists, so there's been a lot of talking in my house," says Calvi. "I'm very strong-willed, and I know what I want."
This is, after all, a young woman who counts musician Brian Eno, and designer Karl Lagerfeld, among her fans—and has held her own creatively with both. Her mentor, Eno, lent his voice to a song on Calvi's debut self-titled album, while Lagerfeld, who hands that same album out to journalists, photographed her for French milliner, Maison Michel: "He's much more rock'n'roll than I am," Calvi says of Lagerfeld.
